Corporate editorial style guides are vital for presenting a consistent and high-quality written presentation. Learn how to set objectives for developing your style guide; establish the breadth and depth of content; plan the style-guide development process; consider hardcopy versus Web delivery; and maintain a dynamic and useful style guide for your organization. This interactive seminar offers opportunities to review many samples of style guides and help participants decide what is best for their organization.

Intended Audience
This workshop is for anyone who is considering creating a corporate style guide or anyone who is charged with maintaining and refreshing a guide.

This class is taught on PCs. All participants should have a working knowledge of MS Windows prior to attending class.

  • Lesson 1: Justifying the Resources for a Corporate Style Guide
    • How can a style guide help to sell your company's products?
    • How can a style guide save your company money?
  • Lesson 2: Setting Objectives: depth, breadth, paper versus Web delivery
    • Defining style guide goals
    • Pros and cons: forming a team, writing it yourself, hiring a consultant
    • Writing the documentation plan: schedule, budget, scope, review team, risks
    • Getting buy-in from managers, editors, writers, and production staff
  • Lesson 3: Writing the Guide
    • Agreeing on the ground rules
    • Defining your audience
    • Issues in cross-divisional reviews and decisions
    • Gathering source materials: books, journals, Web sites, examples
    • Looking at some industry style guides
    • Writing, editing, reviewing, rewriting, editing, proofing
    • Managing relationships
  • Lesson 4: Issues in Writing the Style Guide
  • Lesson 5: Discussions
    • How will your guide differ?
    • What kinds of topics are not appropriate?
  • Lesson 6: Supplemental Language Discussion and Exercises
    • Grammar and other downright wrong errors
    • Just what do we mean by “style”?
    • How do improvements differ from “style”?
