Description
This workshop teaches how editors can work with writers to make substantive changes on complex manuscripts. Through lectures, exercises, and discussions, participants will master the skills of organizing content, adding and deleting text without changing the writer's meaning, avoiding jargon, and eliminating redundant language. A quick review of copyediting basics is included. Finally, participants will build their editorial skills even further by learning "tricks of the trade" that will increase efficiency and productivity.

Intended Audience
This workshop is intended for those who already have experience with the copyediting process and how to identify errors and edit text and who wish to develop their substantive editing skills.

  • The roles of the intermediate and senior editors
  • How to edit manuscripts from your readers' point of view
  • The differences among proofreading, copyediting, and substantive/developmental editing
  • How to increase your productivity, saving both you and your company valuable time and money
  • New ways to effectively manage editor/author/supervisor relationships
  • Alternative ways of dealing with familiar problems in your company or department
  • The goals and "rules" of editing
  • Estimating edit time
  • Determining levels of edit
  • Extensive grammar and punctuation review
  • Establishing and maintaining style
  • Maintaining consistency in long documents
  • Sequencing information
  • Eliminating jargon, noun strings, sexism, and redundancy
